Random Viking Dude chalk art by JCSArtCan Random Viking Dude chalk art by JCSArtCan
5 1/2 hours later, finished. The chalk art street festival is only for a limited time. This is what I came up with on the fly. Unluckily I had no reference. The original idea wouldn't fit the area I was given.

Random Viking Dude chalk art by ~JCSArtCan Street art that is truly 'on the street'. Much attention for street art gets directed at work depicted purely with spraycans. The attention to detail in what is after a very short lived piece as a chalk drawing, reminds us that there is still a lot of fantastic work out there that does not always fit the typical 'street art' box. Thank you. It was a fun learning experience to play with chalk art, and not make it look like chalk. The key (which was hard to find any tips) was water and a cheap sponge brush.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I wish I did have some sort of reference for the art. Based on what I did for last year, I had a layout that was more vertical. I would not work for this area. The chest area is way to big and doesn't wrap around the ribcage correctly. I was mainly playing with the chalk drawing techniques I found online. Chalk drawing techniques are very difficult to find. My favorite was a sponge brush with water. It really helped with the blending, and more solid color. I was appreciative of the photographer giving me the photo file. The picture I took had sun and shadow over the art, and made it look funny. I should of took another photo, so it isn't so distorted, and more straight on. Perspective is a #$%^& deepening on where your standing. Thanks again for the comments everyone. Both the positive, the helpful, and the negative. Every comment helps one grow as an artist. I am planning on practicing more before the event next year. I will post those images also.

I dont mean to sound mean or offensive, but this is really quite bad and I am honestly annoyed that it has received Daily Deviation. Alas, this is what deviantart has become. A+ on anatomy A+ on color work and F on originality

I can appreciate the technical skill, given the medium... But there are a lot of anatomy issues and other problems here. Fantastic blending, though.

I've seen body builder chests that look similar to that. I totally get what you're going for there. The armor is amazing as well as the highlights and the face is my favorite part. I can't believe you got that much detail with chalk. I did a remake of scream in chalk once and that was a complete bitch so I applaud you. DD well deserved.

the anatomy is wrong in so many levels...if you try to work more on that, or at least use a good reference, it would be perfect because you already know the technique. :)

i actually think the head/arms/shoulders a not bad or distracting however i find the abs and chest to be slightly distracting honestly (i was actually going to comment on this when i saw this comment). It is just something ot work on in the future and considering you didn't have a ref it is pretty great ^^

There are no abs! His pecs distracted you, so much so, that you were actually making up anatomy in your head! WOW

seems like it. tbh, DD's arent that special cause they been giving them out to some of the most simple and sometimes the stupidest pics that doesnt have any effort in them. its not just the anatomy you should be looking at, the color, the fact he did this in chalk, maybe without a ref but without the fact he cant erase it?

So...

- The color's amazing because it was done in colored chalk.

- You can't erase chalk... and yet it isn't permanent.

I think DD's are a kind of a "hey, cool!" thing. It could be energy, color, attention to detail or just sheer badassery. Don't take it so seriously.

Since attention to detail isn't there, I can only assume that it's here because it has color.

Since, you know, color's such a fascinating trend recently.
