I was playing around with Corel Draw X5 on my lunch breaks. I used gradient mesh. Along with regular vector objects. No bitmaps or photo effects were used.

I like the delicate lines & forms you captured on her hair:)
That's what makes vector shapes useful, but tough at the same time.
